About the Power Authority Facility:
In December 2005, NYPA put into commercial operation one of the cleanest, most-efficient power plants in New York City’s history in Astoria, Queens. The highly efficient combined-cycle power-generating facility will provide New York City with adequate, reliable power supplies in the new era of electricity-industry deregulation. The power plant will burn clean natural gas, with low sulfur oil as a backup fuel.

The location for our new plant is a seven-acre parcel that is part of a 47-acre site the Power Authority owns in Astoria, Queens. The new facility is adjacent to the Poletti project, an 885-megawatt generating facility that also runs on natural gas, with low sulfur oil as a backup fuel. The Power Authority property is part of a larger site on which other power plants are located. Since 1905 this property, in the northwest corner of Queens, overlooking the East River, has been used for electricity generation, fuel storage and related industrial purposes. By building the new combined-cycle plant, the Power Authority was able to use the existing infrastructure.
